Coachella Valley High School Junior Elected Cal-HOSA State President

At the 30th annual State Leadership conference in Sacramento, Junior Simon Thomas Moore was elected president of the State of California chapter of Health Occupations Students of America, or HOSA, Future Health Professionals.

The conference was held the third week of March in Sacramento. HOSA is one of the largest and most prominent career technical student organizations, or CTSOs, in the nation.

Founded in Texas in 1976, as an organization to advance and prepare high school students for careers in health, HOSA positions students in secondary, post-secondary and even middle school for exposure to medical occupations.

The competitions at all state leadership conferences are organized by National HOSA. States compete in events such as biomedical debate, sports medicine, CPR & first-aid, public health, community awareness, public health and dozens of other events related to health occupations.

The path to presidency was a long one for Moore. He would run for office all the way back in elementary school, and never get elected even once.  From these not-so-promising early years, Simon would pass an online exam, a state board of directors interview and a public Q & A before the delegates would elect him as the first candidate from Riverside County to win the HOSA presidency.

Simon’s high school, Coachella Valley High School, also won a state medal for the third year in a row. The team of Dominguez, Gallegos, Montoya & Ramires won Bronze third for their Public Health presentation. In June, they will travel to Orlando, Florida for HOSA Internationals.

While many other schools win medals, CVHS’ three consecutive years of wins, and the presidency are a considerable achievement for their school, considering the rigorous competition. Each year, students from more affluent, more population-dense demographics press the odds of victory against them.

“As a 16-year native resident in California, this is an honor which I will handle with care as I plan to make the 2018 HOSA year more interactive and exhilarating than ever before,” Simon says of his victory.

Simon will work to maintain his 4.33 GPA while he travels back and forth to Sacramento and even Washington, D.C., where he will work with his state officer team to learn more about issues affecting Healthcare and plan for the 2018 State Leadership Conference in Anaheim, CA. Simon will also speak at various venues throughout the state.

You will be gone for 5 nights, 6 days. Think of what you need each night to feel comfortable. K

Who are you? Bring your school / Health Academy picture ID. Also, bring anything you could pin on your blazer (the one with the most pins is like a stud, or a studette!)

Toiletries: From shampoo, soap, toothbrush, deodorant, lotion to all the special needs – bring it.

Clothes: Hopefully, you sleep in something while at home. Bring it. It’s cold, bring a jacket, long sleeve, short sleeve. Be ready to be cool, warm, hot, cool, cold.

HOSA uniform: All events require HOSA blues, or your scrubs. If CPR/FA, bring scrubs & blues.

Casual clothes: No ripped / holey jeans. Better grab some thread! The only time HOSA uniform is HOSA events. Otherwise, CVUSD dress code applies. Wanna let it all hang out? Don’t! If you do, first, you’ll be cold. 2^nd , you can’t come out of your room.

Do you like freezing? Don’t bring what’s listed in “Clothes” above.

There are HOSA pool parties at Sheraton & Hyatt. Wanna go? Bring trunks / bathing suit. No thong Speedos, please (ewwh).

Money makes the world go round. Bring some, but don’t waste it on $4 Starbucks drinks. If you want to fit in, buy one of the $1 Starbucks reusable cups and refill it each day. Drink with pride and a smile and save your $. Past HOSA members say $100 is more than enough. Your breakfasts & dinners are covered. Save a banana and yogurt from breakfast.

Special Events: Wednesday is San Francisco! We’ll take a train ride from Sacramento to San Francisco, then back by 21:00.

Airport Security: No liquid >3 oz. allowed in carry-on. You can check up to 2 bags (<50 lbs.), and have one (1) carry-on.

Video Games? Well, after hours when you’re in your room, maybe it’s okay. Or, maybe, you should be following up on your competition, or the contact information you received from others throughout the day.
